June 2007

Imagine living in a comfortable, healthy home that makes it easy to live at a truly sustainable level. Imagine strolling along bicycle-friendly, child-safe streets, past community vegetable gardens and wildlife habitat. Imagine the convenience of the nearby neighborhood center bustling with cafes and shops selling local and fair-trade goods. One Planet Living®

Our proposed partnership with One Planet Living, a non-profit joint initiative of World Wildlife Fund and sustainability experts BioRegional, helps forward-thinking municipalities and real estate developers build neighborhoods that reduce the ecological footprint of residents to a truly sustainable, “one planet” level. One Planet Living is an exclusive network of the world's greenest neighborhood developments in America, Canada, Europe, South Africa, China and Australia. In the United States, a select few projects will be officially endorsed. Their independent endorsement is a sign of the highest achievement in sustainable design. We are currently beginning work on a Sustainable Action Plan which will record the vision, intentions, associated sustainability targets, and potential delivery mechanisms for delivering a sustainable, landmark development at Sonoma Mountain Village that rises to the One Planet Living challenge. Once this Plan has been approved, BioRegional and World Wildlife Fund may invite Sonoma Mountain Village to join the One Planet Living Network of Sustainable Communities. By combining the two principles of New Urbanism and Sustainability, we can create unique communities such as Sonoma Mountain Village. We also feel it is important to incorporate these principles into other properties and companies we own, most notably Codding Construction and the newly formed, Codding Steel Frame Technologies.

Codding Steel Frame Solutions is a cold-formed recycled steel manufacturing technologies process for commercial and home framing. This facility will be at Sonoma Mountain Village and will be solar powered. This process is dramatically more efficient and also preserves our natural resources. Traditional wood framing for a typical 2,000 square foot home utilizes 40 mature trees, while the recycled Steel Frame Solutions process uses 8 recycled cars. Many times with standard wood framing materials, the contractor has to check for irregular or poor quality items to send back to the lumber yard. This recycled steel framing can be efficiently delivered in 1 load and erected in 3-4 days with no inconsistency in the product. This framework also allows for a termite- and mildew-free shell with straighter walls and less settling of the structure over time.

Please come to our next public community meeting in the Event Center on June 23rd from 10am-12 noon to visit and hear an update on Sonoma Mountain Village.
